The October lingering..
Ok, allow me to take you back in time… allow me to make a short story long!! ha! This might seem a little random, a little niche but I promise it has teaching!
In Greek mythology the equinoxes are tied to the journey of Persephone -who is that?.. well, Persephone is the daughter of Demeter (goddess of agriculture, fertility, and the harvest) and Zeus (king of the gods).
The story has it that Persephone was abducted by Hades the God of the underworld.,while she was picking flowers in a meadow. Hades rose from the underworld and carried her into his realm to be his queen. Her Mother, Demeter was crippled by the loss of her daughter and withdrew her blessings from the earth. Crops withered, and the world fell into famine.
Eventually, Zeus intervened, and a compromise was reached… Persephone would spend part of the year with Hades in the underworld and part of the year with her mother on earth.
So, there we have it - The Autumn Equinox marks her descent into the underworld, carrying the world into the darker half of the year. The Spring Equinox is her return, when the earth blossoms again with life and fertility.
And see how we meet this in ourselves too? In those colder months with less light we are asked to decent into ourselves, we cant be reliant on the sunshine and warmth of the outside world to make us feel good, we have to take stock of find our internal world, find our internal light, turn inwards rather than head outwards. Once Spring comes we start to feel supported by Nature once again.
This is why seasonal depression is actually so prevalent- we can’t bask in sunshine, heat and the outside world- we have to create a finely tuned place within ourselves – can I meet myself without the stimulus and light, heat and activity from the outside world? am I willing to decent into myself for a period of time? Am I willing to meet every season of myself?
Ok, ok I’m going to continue with your Greek mythology lesson!
Astrologically, the Autumn/spring Equinox always begins with the Suns entry into Libra, the sign of the scales. Libra is a fascinating sign to me for so many reasons. For one being, unlike every other zodiac symbol, Libra is not a creature but an object. We know Libra as the scales and her scales are sacred.
The story of the Scales is linked to Titaness Themis. She was Goddess of Divine Law and Cosmic Order, she would weigh truth against falsehood, light against shadow. Later, her daughter, Astraea - the virgin goddess of innocence and purity, inherited the scales of justice.
Its said astrae took the scales to earth and would weigh a feather against the good deeds of a person. When humankind fell into corruption and sins, it broke Astraeas heart and she withdrew from the earth and ascended to the heavens as the constellation Virgo, while her scales remained beside her as the constellation Libra. I don’t know about you? but these stories give me goosebumps. It creates so much more depth and meaning and beauty to life - we can look up to the sky and see some lights at night or we can look up and marvel at tapestry of stories and connection.
OCTOBERS ENERGY//
Libra’s scales serve as a reminder to weigh light and darkness, action and intention, and to seek equilibrium in all areas of life. They remind us that balance of life is not static, but a delicate dance, held for a moment before the scales tip again. To, in fact, loose balance is part of finding balance. And if you know a Libra- you will see how they seek fairness, justice, they are the peacekeeper and most fascinatingly is Libra learn themselves through another. Just like the feather being weighed again the people. Libra learns through its balance of relationships.
As we have entered Libra season, I write this to you as an invitation to share your ideas with others and re-evaluate your balance within all areas of the world. Eclipses can make us feel quite insular and when we meet Libra season it’s a little tugging feeling of “I think I want to share this with someone now”. Libra is an air sign, after all and air signs thrive on exchanging the inner workings of their minds.
Libra season often presents us with a mirror in someone else- an opportunity to learn yourself through another. It can feel easier to be alone, sometimes. We feel un-triggered, only responsible for our own world. But in relationship, the mirror is held up, reflecting both our light and our shadows, it’s a dance of exchanged energy. For Libras relationships are the most important arena of their lives, they maintain them, they feel safe in them and during this season we can positively nurture and grow our connections. Yet, be mindful of the meeting of the shadow side of Libra - the imbalance within relationships- the chameleon partner “you like cars so I like cars” the loss of the “I” and the emphasis on the “we”. Indecisiveness can be stirred up in libra season. Constantly weighing options, searching for fairness, and trying to keep the peace can leave the mind of The Sun and Mercury transit in Libra in disarray.
So, this is a time to be mindful of how your relationships are meeting places for yourself as well and how the balance is being distributed there.
Tips for Libra season…
· Seek Balance – Notice where you’ve tipped the scales and where you can restore a healthy balance.
· Reflect Through Relationships – Pay attention to how others mirror your strengths and shadow patterns. How people in your circle are helping you grow or discover yourself. Remember- what we notice in others is a reflection of ourselves. Are someone of your relationships out of balance?
· Communicate Thoughtfully – Practice diplomacy, look at all sides of things, find the common ground, pursue peace in communication rather than conflict.
· Honor Your Individuality – Hold steady to your sense of self in connection with others. Careful of the chameleon creeping in.
